Gathering

I work with women, teaching art in two shelters in Los Angeles. These classes and workshops are designed to introduce artists to a wide variety of media as well as provide a safe space to think and play creatively. Through our work together we explore ideas about resilience, self-care, confidence, and attempt to establish a creative practice as a significant part of building self-esteem. As well, the work we do emphasizes the formal aspects of art-making, using the artistic process as a way to develop clarity in thinking, decision making, and taking up space, visually, socially, verbally, and intellectually through articulate and interesting artworks. These women-folk are homeless/displaced and many are recovering from the traumatic experience of chronic incarceration and other forms of institutionalization. And though they express a clear desire to seriously pursue their work, it is very difficult to obtain the appropriate supplies for building an art practice. I invite you to take a look at the artist profiles listed below (updated weekly) and support an individual artist by providing some (or all) of the supplies she needs to build her practice. Many thanks in advance for your generosity and grace.

(Please note: In order to honor a right to privacy, each artist will remain anonymous and instead be referred to by the names of some of our most historically revered women artist-folk. Many thanks for your understanding. Questions? Email kristy.lovich@gmail.com)

Louise Bourgeois: Louise is currently in the process of applying for a scholarship to attend Art Center at Night in Pasadena, CA in order to continue building her practice as an illustrator. She is primarily interested in creating images for graphic novels, manga, anime, and would like to explore installation and sculpture. Louise is very serious about transforming her interests as an artist into a career that can help her build financial stability. She would like to live near the Angeles Forest someday.

Some supplies she will need: Sketchbooks (pads and hardbound), drawing pencils, drawing board, illustration board (cold and hot press), x-acto knife and blades, self-healing cutting mat, prismacolor pencils and markers (all colors), art supply backpack designed for commuting by bike/bus, gift cards to Blick Art Supply, Utrecht Art Supplies.

To support Louise’s practice please send supplies to:

Adrian Piper:
Adrian is interested in creative writing and illustration. Though she has never taken any art classes, she’s spent the last ten years drawing and writing poetry, finding an interest in fantasy and folklore. She struggles to balance her creative work with the labor of caring for her two children (both under 3) and recently expressed that it is challenging for her to find a way t approach drawing now that she is in recovery. “I used to have so many ideas.” she said “…but I need to figure out how to make this happen.” We are working together to create a schedule for art-making that coincides with her responsibilities as a mother. “I can draw or writ for ten minutes every night.” She is dangerously optimistic.

Some supplies she will need: Sketchbooks (pads and hardbound), drawing pencils, drawing board, illustration board (cold and hot press), x-acto knife and blades, self-healing cutting mat, prismacolor pencils and markers (all colors), art supply backpack designed for commuting by bike/bus, gift cards to Blick Art Supply, Utrecht Art Supplies.
